Who can go for kidney transplantation?

All patients with ESKD cannot go for kidney transplantation. Recipient work up will determine the suitability for the transplantation. (see recipient work up )

  • Patients having & Cancer & Active Infection can't go for transplantation
  • Patients falling in fallowing categories have to be evaluated well before they can be considered for Kidney transplantation
  1. Old age

Old people and those with severe heart, lung or liver disease are likely to have short life span. They will therefore not enjoy the benefit of transplant

  2. Severe heart disease, lung disease or liver disease

  3. HIV positivity

HIV-positive patients maintain the capacity to reject organ transplant and would therefore require standard immunosuppressive therapy which can aggravate the course of HIV.
  4. Psychiatric illness

Psychiatric illness of a degree that impairs patient's capacity to understand the transplant procedures and its complications is a contraindication to transplant.

  5. Other problems

(Being overweight or having an exposure to hepatitis or tuberculosis that have risks.)
In short, individuals wanting to go for kidney transplant must be in good health except for the kidney problem.
