Changes In Lifestyle

One of the most difficult things that may happen for all patients with ESRD is the change in life-style that results from the disease and its treatment.

Most patients with a chronic illness become depressed. There is always a feeling of "why me!". Not only is the patient affected, but the whole family may have a difficult time adjusting to the illness and its treatment. To add to this, is the burden of heavy expenditure that this form of treatment requires.

It is important to ask for help if one has difficulty in adjusting to the changes that occur. One should never be reluctant in asking for help in dealing with some of the emotional stresses of illness. It is not always possible to deal with the depression or anger only within the family.

There appear to be 3 stages in adjusting to dialysis treatment :

The first stage is known as a "honeymoon period". This occurs shortly after dialysis is started. Many of the symptoms of ESRD are relieved and patient feels much better. This may last for a few weeks.

The second stage is discouragement and a feeling of hopelessness about the disease and its form of treatment. It is at this stage that the financial burden is felt most heavy. One might become irritable at home and angry at the dialysis machine.

The third stage is a period of adaptation. During this period one learns to accept the limitations of conservative treatment and adjust to the dialytic treatment. One of the common problem that occurs in patients with ESRD is a decrease in sexual interest and in function. This occurs in both males and females.

Travel :

Many patients are concerned that if they are on dialysis, they will not be able to travel. Currently, in our country, most major cities have dialysis units. It is always possible to arrange for dialysis at other center during travel. However, it is important to plan a trip in advance so that one can be assured that the center does accept visitors. It also helps doctors to prepare the details of medical history, investigations and treatment for the dialysis center that one would be visiting. For those who are on CAPD, they could carry their dialysis bags or buy them from the city they are visiting.

Patient responsibilities :

For a smooth functioning of the dialysis unit and for better treatment, one has to shoulder certain responsibilities.

  1. One must keep scheduled dialysis appointments.

  2. One must be considerate to other patients and nurses.

  3. One must co-operate with the dialysis personnel, by adhering to :

    1. Diet and fluid restrictions and

    2. Taking all prescribed medicines regularly.
