Drug induced kidney Injury
kidney injury can be acute, meaning the kidneys suddenly stop working, or chronic, meaning the kidneys slowly and progressively lose their ability to function.
 
Incidence
Drug induced kidney failure is seen in as high as 20% of patients with kidney failure. Incidence of drug induced kidney disease is increasing because of ever increasing number of drugs and easy availability of over the counter drugs like pain killers.
 

How do drugs injure the kidneys?

There are various ways in which drugs can affect the kidneys.

  • They can affect the blood supply to the kidneys.
  • They can cause direct injury to kidneys.
  • They can cause obstruction to the flow of urine.
  • They can cause an allergic injury to the kidneys.
